Chekan (pronounced Chek-Ahn) is a simple, wonderfully resourceful and positive lady who is one of the few friends who inspire me. This is simple account of how this stay-at-home Mom became an Entrepreneur who couldn't stop making money even if she tried!
Like many women, Chekan had simple expectations in life. She was was contented to be a stay-at-home Mom, taking care of her family, but When her kids were older and didn't need so much attention, she found a job at a major electronics production factory to keep busy and make a little extra money. She began picking up English simply to better herself. Eventually, her proficiency in English helped her secure a job in the company where I worked some ten years ago.
In her second year as receptionist in the company, fate took a cruel twist and changed her direction in life. Her husband was diagnosed with a illness which was potentially life-threatening. Faced with the very real possibility that she might have to be the sole bread winner, she did some serious thinking before joining a network marketing program dealing with household products. Although it was difficult at first, she carried on simple for the love of her family. She learnt the ropes of network marketing and quickly moved up the ladder to success. If you are pitching investors to give you money for a new venture, you should subscribe to the following rules:
1. Explain exactly what your business is within the first thirty seconds. Many entrepreneurs waste valuable time giving loads of data, background and other info—all the while investors are left scratching their heads thinking “What does this business actually DO?”
2. Tell your audience who your customers will be. Paint a vivid, specific picture of these people.

Finally, make each pitch presentation serve as a focus group for your next presentation. When one group of investors asks you a series of questions after you pitch, write down all of those questions and make sure most of them are answered in your next pitch so that the next group doesn’t have to ask them. Keep pitching and keep improving your pitch and eventually you may get funded.

One of the hardest presentations to make is the entrepreneurial pitch. You have a great idea for a business and you want someone to give you money to make it happen. The problem is that venture capitalists, angel investors, and even rich uncles are heavily predisposed against you. Why? Because 99% of the pitches they hear sound like sure-fire prescriptions to lose money!
If you are pitching investors to give you money for a new venture, you should subscribe to the following rules:
1. Explain exactly what your business is within the first thirty seconds. Many entrepreneurs waste valuable time giving loads of data, background and other info—all the while investors are left scratching their heads thinking “What does this business actually DO?”
2. Tell your audience who your customers will be. Paint a vivid, specific picture of these people.
3. Explain why your customers going to give you there hard-earned money.
4. Explain who your competitors are. (And if you say you have no competitors, that is a certain sign you are unsophisticated and deserve no investment money!)
5. Explain why you are the ONE to make this happen.
6. Give your presentation with confidence and enthusiasm. Investors want a founder/CEO to be a chief salesperson; they want to see that you can convince the world of your dream—not just them.

The explosion of new technologies make this an unprecedented period in economic history for entrepreneurial opportunities: cheap computers, new software applications and digital networks - namely the Internet - are powerful tools available to everyone who wants to create financial independence and improve his or her lifestyle.
The Money Game
I've been a student of business since I began my career as a venture capitalist on Wall Street. Over the years I raised millions of dollars to finance numerous entrepreneurs and start-up companies until I decided to become an entrepreneur myself and financed my own companies in broadcasting, alternative energy, software, and telecommunications. I was the CEO of the company that built the first digital network in Moscow, in 1990, and started one of the first B2B Internet service providers.
It's from this perspective that I see fantastic new entrepreneurial opportunities unfolding. And nowhere is this more apparent than in the world of communications and information.

The Internet now makes it possible to reach almost any person, anywhere in the world, in only a few seconds and for only a few pennies. But what makes it even more significant is that computers can convert all the traditional analog forms of information (sound and voice, printed words, pictures and data) into a common digital medium for transmission over the Internet. This capability is radically changing existing businesses and creating vast new entrepreneurial opportunities.
While the Internet is affecting every business in every industry, its greatest impact will be on the information industries' products and services. Think of some of the biggest businesses in the world. Think entertainment (music and movies), think broadcasting (news, information and entertainment), think publishing (books and magazines), and biggest of all, think training and education (books, courses and continuing education).
To see the Internet's potential impact, let's look at one small, well-established medium: the book.
Analog Economics
A physical book requires harvesting trees to make paper, onto which a story or information is transferred via a printing press. Then many hands and lots of energy are required to move the book from manufacturing plant to retail store and, finally, to the consumer. This process is resource, labor and capital intensive.
To see how this works in financial terms, let's consider the author of our book.
In the analog world she writes her book and receives 10 percent of every sale, or $2.50 on each $25 book sale. The publisher retains the remaining $22.50 for manufacturing, distribution and selling expenses. Let's further assume that her publisher pushes hard and sells 25,000 copies in one year, a decent number in the offline publishing world. Our author would then earn $62,500 ($2.50 x 25,000 copies) for her creative efforts.
Digital Economics
The same book can be produced and packaged in a digital form known as an 'eBook', and delivered anywhere in the world in seconds, at 1/100th the cost and with almost no environmental impact.
So let's assume our author writes that same book, but decides to become an entrepreneur in the digital world by setting up a small Web business and selling her eBook online, over the Internet, to a worldwide market. And for the sake of this example, let's assume she sells the same number of books at the same price.
Looking at the costs of doing this, over the year she'll spend about $2,500 to build the Website, $4,000 a month for a half-time Webmaster, $150 per month to host the Website (that sells and collects money 24 hours a day, seven days a week), and an additional $10,000 per month to buy pay-per-click ads on Google to get traffic to her site.
At the end of one year her expenses ($2,500 for construction, $48,000 for the Webmaster, $1,800 for hosting and $120,000 for advertising) would total about $172,300. On the income side, her revenues ($25 per copy x 25,000 copies) would total $625,000. When we subtract her expenses from her revenues, she's left with $452,700. Cheap digital tools and the Internet's reach provide her with the leverage to do a little more work…but make a lot more money. She could never enjoy this sort of success in the offline world.
This simple example shows the amazing leverage of becoming an entrepreneur and selling information products in the new digital world. Whereas in the physical world our author earned 10 percent of the revenues ($62,500), in the digital world she earns more like 70 percent ($452,700), or seven times more income.
The New Capital
This new digital world shifts the advantage from those with, or having access to, financial capital, to those with intellectual capital. And that's exciting.
In the analog world of physical publishing, setting up the systems to manufacture, store, ship, distribute and retail books requires lots of financial capital. Plants and offices have to be built to hold the equipment, people and inventory. Trucks have to be purchased to transport the books to the stores that have to be opened to sell them. As a result, entrepreneurs have had to start almost any venture by first raising a lot of financial capital, commonly known as venture capital.
Again, the Internet changes all this.
In the digital world, the business infrastructure is embedded inside computers and networks, and increasingly intelligent software replaces most of the manual and clerical functions critical to any business. Setting up a digital business requires intellectual capital but relatively little financial capital. Thus the power shifts from the people with the money to the people with the ideas and intellectual horsepower to recognize, harness, and leverage the new information technologies.
The Economic Tsunami
Already we've seen 30-year-olds start with little or nothing on the Internet and become multimillionaires (even some billionaires) while large companies run to the courts in an effort to hold back the economic tsunami brought on by these new technologies and quick-witted entrepreneurs.
We first saw the digital world impact the music industry; now it's affecting Hollywood's monopoly on film and video distribution, and soon we'll see it affecting the publishing and education fields. Much faster, lower cost digital systems are replacing traditional, slow physical manufacturing and distribution systems.
As the older physical systems crumble under the economics of the new technologies, countless jobs and careers are being lost in the process. We see long-term employment disappearing; pensions are on the way out; salaries are not what they used to be. And this comes at a time when the cost of living continues to rise. Infopreneurs are the new entrepreneurs who envision ways to apply new information technologies and systems to satisfy market needs and wants. They can see and create new economic models. Based on my research, this seems to be the basic principle that website owners have been following to get passive income online:
* Get many people to come to your website
* Get them to click on your Adsense links
Sounds simple enough. Get people into your website from Google search, then link out to an Adsense Ad. Search In – Adsense Out.
Practically applying it to get sufficient commendable income, however, can be quite a challenge.
The first problem is how to get many visitors to your website.
That’s where Search Engine Optimization comes in. However, this is really easier said that done. It’s a bit of an artwork. You basically have to read the mind of an Internet user. What keywords would he use? Why would he visit your website? Do you have the content go get people interested enough to get to your website?
Basically, your goal is visibility. You have to be seen. You can do this using SEO or using traditional brand-building methods. Tell your friends, family and colleagues. If they have websites, politely ask if you could link with each other.
For those lucky few that are already on top of the search engines, this is not a problem. Others (including myself) would have to work hard at it. Look at FilipinoLinks.com. It’s been around for a very long time and has made quite a foundation. It would not be too difficult for its owners to tweak the website for SEO.
Experts have varied opinions on what to put in a website. Some say, put relevant important content – with around 500-1000 words on each of your website. Some say provide simple 300 word news posts.
Another option to get clicks would be to advertise online for keywords. Adwords is an example of a tool that can allow you to do this. There will be marketing expenses in this scenario. The goal here is to get more Adsense income than Adwords Expenses – which is really basic business sense. This is easier said than done, I tried it and got dismal results.
The next problem would be how to get visitors to click on Adsense links.
Well, the first thing that needs to be done is to get an Adsense account. It’s pretty easy to setup. After that, you need to put the Adsense links on your website. There are people who say make it blend it when the rest of your pages. Here, on my website, you can see my Adsense Ads that seem to be part of the overall theme.
Other experts say the more noticeable the advertisements, the more they will be clicked. In this case, the Ads stand out prominently – with a different, and sometimes contrasting color scheme. One tip given was actually position the Google Ad right next to an image/picture. Viewers tend to click on picture links, so more income potential income there.
What does this all mean for a Filipino Entrepreneur?
In my point of view, it means opportunities. Although I have just started experimenting on all of this myself, there seems to be a real possibility of gaining a little revenue. If you have an online business and it isn’t making any money, perhaps through a lack of hits, you can give it a real boost, by writing articles.
So how does that work? It’s easy, and it costs you nothing. First of all, write some articles, and that’s not difficult. They can be about anything, and I mean anything, from tuning a piano, to the effects of nuclear fallout at Chernobyl, to running a small business magazine from home. Anything. Of course, it gives credence to your written work, if you have some knowledge and expertise in your subject, but we all have experience of something.
Perhaps you were a student once, however long ago. Perhaps you still have your study notes. Dig them out and knock them into shape. Perhaps you have accountancy experience, or of managing a business, or maybe you are an expert fisherman, or a cricket umpire, a driving instructor, a great swimmer, a whiz at metalwork, anything. We all have talents and expertise in some areas, it is just a case of recognising the fact, and making the most of them.
Once you’ve found your subjects, write away, ideally around 500 words each time. If you have long stuff, break it up into more manageable chunks. You cannot include within the article blatant advertising or promotion for your business, nor write a press release publicising any business, web site, or event, but never fear, you will benefit, and this is how.
At the end of the article you can include a biography section, perhaps three or four paragraphs long. It might include something like “James Parkes was an accountant for twenty-two years and you can find details of his services at www.jamesparkes.com ” (don’t fret that’s a dummy address.) But you get the drift. You can include three or four different website addresses in your biography section, and they all lead directly back to you, and your enterprises.
So where do you go then, with these articles? You upload them to an article exchange. There are dozens of these about now, testament to how successful they have been. I like ezinearticles.com, one of the first, and still for me, the best. And no, I have no financial interest in this site, nor am I an affiliate.
It costs you nothing to upload your articles, and you can upload as many, or as few, as you like, and once their moderator has passed them as acceptable, your articles go live on their database. They currently have over 150,000 live articles running on every subject under the sun, and that attracts a huge viewing audience. Google “article exchanges” to find many others.
I have forty plus articles running at present, and over 15,000 people have viewed my articles worldwide, I kid you not. Every article has its little hit counter for you to monitor if you so wish. If only one in twenty of those viewers clicked on one of my web site addresses in my biog section, then over 750 people have viewed my stuff, and that’s 750 potential customers I didn’t have before, and it has cost me nothing, other than a little bit of time.
But it doesn’t stop there. Anyone, and I mean anyone, can reproduce those articles free of charge, in their newspapers and magazines, on their web sites, and within newsletters and ezines and ebooks, right around the world. And they do. There is a hunger out there for fresh new writing on every subject, and the articles are picked up, and reproduced, time and time again. The publications and web sites reproducing these articles may do so as often as they like, providing they publish the article in its entirety, exactly as is, including your biog paragraphs at the foot.
So your messages are now being carried free of charge all around the globe by third parties you don’t even know. Literally so. My articles have appeared dozens of times in American, Australian, Canadian, Indian, and New Zealand media, to name but a few, so eventually you have no idea how many people actually see your scribblings, but that doesn’t matter, providing it brings additional new viewers to your sites. Last time I looked, I had over 500 copies of my articles running worldwide, and how many viewers are seeing them? A huge number, that’s for sure, and that publicity has cost nothing. If I can do it, anyone can.
As we all know, hits make sales. What’s the point of having a great website that no one ever sees? This way, an almost unlimited number of viewers can be driven to your site, for free. It really does work.
Never consider paying to have your articles published, as some exchanges will try and do. That would defeat the object. And why pay per click either, when you can have clicks for nowt? Try and write a new article every week. That way, you will continually refresh your viewers and audience, and build up greater content available. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to make your websites successful. Give it a try. Be successful. You can do it, you really can.
